We are working with the Prof. Hendrik Tieben and 40+ students from Urban Studies Program of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, to explore different Site Activation and Placemaking cases happening in our city.
To learn about the co-create journey of the "Communal Mountainside Gym" located on the shoulder of Bishop Hill, the team paid a visit to one of the city's most crowded district, Sham Shui Po. Mr. So, the "chief engineer" of the Gym, started his project with a simple idea -- he needs some extra body training equipment for his rehabitation after SARS. Now, there are sheds and booths, fitness equipment, and even a ping-pong table. All these are the result of team efforts of the kai-fongs, who helped managing, tidying and maintaining the little common area. We all had a great lesson from this real-life community-led placemaking initiative.
On the same day, we also visited the idle footbridge and subway in the district and bring back home the question: as urban designers, what can we do with the space. Look forward to our next field trip when the pandemic is over.
